Cornerstone Cooperative Preschool, originally and legally known as Little Creek Preschool, was begun in 1970 with its first class graduating in 1971. It was established by a group of parents who wanted a quality preschool for their children at an affordable cost. Their plan was to collectively act as an administrative body to run the school and to hire a professional teacher to lead the class with the assistance of a helping parent. Little Creek rented space at various churches in Denton over the years and its classes were small and consisted of only a four year old M/W/F class and a three year old Tu/Th class. However, in 1989, Little Creek was reorganized and became “Cornerstone Cooperative Preschool”. It moved to Immaculate Conception Church and at this time a hired aide took the place of the helping parent. Cornerstone’s first year was a huge success and the Parent Board decided to enlarge slightly to include two and a half year olds to five year olds. A second teacher was added and the idea of a helping parent was again incorporated in 1990. After several changes, the school settled in its current location as a M/W/F only school for children between the ages of 12 months and five years old.
In the Fall of 2006 the school expanded once again, by introducing a Tu/Th class for the bigger kids, this was followed by a Tu/Th MDO class in the Spring of 2007 and a Tu/Th class for the 2’s and 3’s that Fall. By now the school was at full capacity, almost doubling its membership since 2005. Cornerstone is the only cooperative preschool in the Denton area and offers parents the unique opportunity to be closely involved with their children’s first school experience.
