A cooperative school has a completely different approach toward the parent than the average for-profit childcare center, because Coop parents contribute their own time and energy to make it work. Here at Cornerstone, family is cherished and celebrated; childhood protected. We understand that with so many families fragmented and busy, it is a rare and unique privilege to spend time with your children and their friends. Parents are asked to volunteer in the two older classrooms as the teacher’s helper 1-2 times per month. Not only is the teacher provided with physical assistance, but parents bring their own interests, talents and ability from which the children glean an extremely rich and diverse experience. Our children are fortunate to have wonderful teachers as well as greatly benefit from being surrounded by committed adults who care about them. This allows for a high rate of risk-taking:the parents are always looking for innovative ways to educate their children and are willing and able to implement some of the newest practices know. In addition to time spent in the classroom, parents are expected to take on a board position or adopt-a-spot in the school and help with school cleaning days and fund raising.
The children flourish in the nurturing , creative atmosphere of the Coop, and the adults, in turn, are inspired, challenged and encouraged by the stimulation and support of the other parents. An additional benefit is the level of familiarity and closeness that evolves between the families. It is the Cornerstone family.
